Emma Toner

Clinical Psychology; Junior Fellow

Emma Toner is a PhD candidate in Clinical Psychology studying under Dr. Bethany Teachman. Emma grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts and earned her BA in Psychology and Sociology from Barnard College. Her research leverages tools from complex systems science to understand and address psychological problems like anxiety and loneliness. She is particularly interested in using real-time data collection methods (e.g., ecological momentary assessment; passive physiological sensing) and computational modeling to examine how these problems develop and are sustained over time. For her dissertation, she is using agent-based and differential equation modeling to formally evaluate hypotheses derived from psychological and social theories about how loneliness develops and becomes chronic. In addition to being a Junior Fellow, Emma is a Fellow through the UVA LIFE program, a partnership with the International Max Planck Research School on the Life Course. In her free time, Emma likes spending time outdoors, hanging out with friends, reading, playing with her dog, trying new foods, and doing puzzles.
