Alanna Bergman
Dr. Alanna Bergman, a nurse scientist, grew up in Philadelphia and received her bachelor’s degree from Temple University and a master’s in nursing science from La Salle University. Her work as a nurse practitioner caring for people living with HIV spurred her decision to pursue a career in research, and particularly to intervene upon stigma as a clinically significant barrier to HIV and tuberculosis care. She received her PhD in nursing from Johns Hopkins University and came to UVA for a post-doctoral fellowship to advance her training in clinical trial design and implementation from mentors in the Schools of Nursing and Medicine. Her research explores social and structural barriers to infectious disease care, using mixed-methods and participatory action research to engage affected communities throughout the research process. Alanna maintains a global research portfolio with ongoing collaborative work in Brazil, South Africa, and Tanzania. In her free time, Alanna enjoys exploring the wild areas around Charlottesville with her husband and three kids, practicing ashtanga yoga, and is learning to knit.
